Spaces Policies

Study Room and Peace & Justice Room Booking Policies

  • Rooms may be reserved in blocks from 15 minutes to three hours  during library hours. for groups of two or more students.  Daily study room booking time for the same group  is limited to a total of three hours per day. Students alone in a study room may be asked to vacate for a group of students.  
  • Only dry snack foods and beverages in closed containers are permitted.
  • Please cancel your booking if you no longer need to use the space. A 15-minute grace period will be given for all room bookings and occupancy, after which time your booking is considered forfeited to others. Library staff may delete the booking so that another may book the room.
  • Rooms are not secure.  The library is not responsible for the loss of items left unattended
  • Please use all equipment with care.
  • Please remove any garbage when vacating the room.

Prayer  Room Policies

Burman Makerspace  Policy

Why

The Burman Library Makerspace offers a variety of technology tools and support to foster creativity, hands-on learning and student success.


Who

Current students, staff and faculty including retired staff and faculty for educational, noncommercial purposes.  This may include assignments, research, art or personal learning.  Access by others may be granted on a case by case basis by the Librarian. Users must be trained and certified by the makerspace technician on the equipment they use.


When

Equipment may only be run when the makerspace is open.  Equipment use must be completed fifteen minutes before closing.   While 3D programming must be done before closing, the 3D printer may be running jobs while the makerspace is closed.


What

  • Equipment may be used for lawful purposes only
  • Intellectual property rights must be respected.
  • Users may not print or create unsafe, obscene, harmful, dangerous, or otherwise inappropriate components.
  • Do not make items for commercial sale or profit.
  • The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.
  • Locker space is available for storing projects in progress.for up to one semester.


How

  • Respect the intent of the makerspace for sharing, collaboration and creativity
  • Show a willingness to learn and share with others
  • Share and discuss your work with others


Follow safety precautions.  

  • Only use equipment on which you have trained and are authorized to use.
  • Do not wear loose clothing.  Tie long hair in a bun.  Nothing on your person should hang away from your body.
  • Ask the staff if you need a refresher on how to use the equipment.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to the staff immediately
  • Report all malfunctions to the staff.  Do not attempt to repair the equipment yourself.
  • Only one person should operate a piece of equipment at one time.  
  • Use of headphones or earbuds is prohibited.  


Respect each other and the space around you. 

  •  Clean up after yourself.
  • Return tools to their proper places
  • Share the space and equipment equitably with others
  • Use the equipment in a careful, reasonable manner to extend its longevity. Replacement or repair charges may be levied


Costs

  • Materials not provided by the student are charged to the student for cost recovery. There is no charge for equipment use.
  • 3D printer: Each student may complete one project  using up to $5 worth of filament per semester. The $5 is non-transferable, ie., one student may not use the $5 limit of another student willing to transfer it.  Students will be charged for the filament used in subsequent projects.
  • Community users will be charged for all filament use and a user fee of 30% of the cost of the filament used.
  • Sewing machine:  Students provide their own material.
  • Laser cutter: Students provide their own materials.

Book an appointment with the University Librarian, Ms. Clark when you need to:

  • focus your topic into a research question
  • select appropriate sources to search for information
  • develop effective search strategies for library databases and the internet
  • ensure your research results are on the appropriate for the assignment
  • learn how to  discern the best sources of information among the vast number of available sources for coursework  or for personal use.
