Carolyn Snipes-Hoyt has enjoyed extended stays in Europe and French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa. She
fearned an M.A. in German at the University of California and then graduate degrees in French
Literature, at the University of Alberta, writing both the M.A. and the Ph.D. theses in French on topics
covering the turn of the twentieth century. She has taught at the University of Alberta (main campus), in
the University of Georgia system, at Pacific Union College (in California), in addition to Burman
University: French language and literature at all levels; and German at the Beginning and Intermediate
levels.

Most recently, her research interests are focused on naturalism, the literary courant initiated by Emile
Zola in the late nineteenth century, and its fortunes in France, Germany/Austria, Canada and the U.S.
(New Orleans, specifically). She has co-edited two volumes of collected essays on Worldwide Naturalism
(Mellen Press, 2006; and Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2013); published articles, book chapters, and
reviews in these areas; and serves as an Associate Editor of Excavatio, an online scholarly journal
sponsored by the Association Internationale Zola et Naturalisme.
