Explore Bach’s music through the lens of transcription, which highlights how flexible and transportable it can be! This program presents music of Bach, performed by baroque string trio, including a Trio Sonata, originally written for organ, a selection of his famous fugues arranged by Mozart with his own newly composed adagios to precede them, and an intimate transcription of the keyboard monument: the Goldberg Variations.

This unusual instrumental duo features the evocative sounds of the Persian santur, an instrument that dates back to Babylonian antiquity, performed in a contemporary style that traverses time. The long, resonating tones of the santur weave naturally with the earthy sounds of modern percussion, creating a seamless and evocative musical journey. The duo’s second collaborative album, Mosàfer, was released in August 2020 to critical acclaim.

Originating in Beirut before civil war intruded, then finding refuge in Canada, the Orontes Guitarists know the power of music to build bridges and to heal. Like the river from which they draw their name, the intercultural trio crosses musical and cultural boundaries and borders. The Orontes Guitarists bring an uplifting blend of baroque, flamenco and blues-inspired classical guitar, with music that transcends the barriers between us.

VIÐARNEISTÍ DUO: CLARINET & MARIMBA

This unusual combo of clarinet and marimba blends the adventurous spirit of Nordic explorers with the allure of the Northern Lights. Viđarnesití is Icelandic for “wood spark” and aptly describes what happens when the rich, sultry tone of the Catherine Wood’s clarinet meets the percussive punch of Victoria Spark’s marimba. The duo’s shared Icelandic heritage is a springboard to explore its Nordic roots with audiences, as these warm and personable artists innovate from a variety of styles and genres.
